Event description

Description

emus (exploratory music sydney) is a full-day exploratory sound-based event presenting a hand-picked selection of performances, workshops and sound-work installations from across the local scene.

Featuring:

Toydeath - Nick Wishart - Teik-Kim Pok - Phillipa
Toydeath produce live music from their tortured treasure-trove of modified toys including guitars, talking dolls and alphabet apples. Formed in 1995 Toydeath have toured Japan, Europe and the USA

Nicola Morton - Liliana Occhiuto - Ailsa Liu
Nicola Morton is a facilitator at All Girl Electronic (2016-2018), a program for young women, trans and non-binary youth from Western Sydney. The program is an answer to the call for gender and cultural diversity within the areas of electronic music production and programming. Her background as a sound artist working with analogue sound and improvisation has informed and motivated the participants. For EMUS/Brand X she will be getting up and performing with sound projects of AGE participants, Ailsa Liu and Liliana Occhiuto. Nicola Morton will perform a set of improvised dance music using modulated bass lines, drum machine and lo-fi vocal sampling.

Jon Hunter
The performance will revolve around discipline and utilising the edge zone of ones control as a tool for instant composition.

Splinter Orchestra
The Splinter Orchestra is a large-scale electro-acoustic improvising ensemble based in Sydney. Every Splinter Orchestra performance unfolds a unique improvisational sonic ecology combining highly developed music skills with thoroughly experimental sound-making and an intuitive compositional repertoire built from years of collective engagement. The entire space becomes a stage for performers and audience alike to wander, carrying their generative or listening attentions amongst, between and through an evolving sonic unkown.

Sonya Holowell
Sonya’s practice is based around the presentation of exploratory vocal music; from improvisation to pre-composed vocal works spanning centuries, genres and cultural contexts. She utilises a vast range of techniques to highlight the fullest capabilities of the voice, with a particular interest in its capacity to express the inexpressible. Sonya has performed at many of the leading festivals for classical, new and experimental music and has collaborated with many award-winning composers and performers in the realm of sound-based and inter-disciplinary art.

Score Club - (band) - Megan Clune - Matthew Hopkins - Andrew Fedorovitch
Score Club is a group of artists, musicians and composers exploring text-based scores as a provocation for music and art making. Their interest lies with the score as a conduit, as well it’s potential to break down the boundaries and hierarchies between subject and object amongst notions of author/performer/audience.

Jim Denley - Amanda Stewart
Join Jim Denley and Amanda Stewart on a sound walk through the surrounding King Cross environment.

Danny Wild
Danny Wild is an Audio Visual artist living and working in Sydney, Australia. His work explores routine and daily living on an absurd and microscopic level. Danny often transforms mundane moments into sublime and surreal experiences. Danny will be creating a video installation collage work that explores Sydney’s landscape and history in a playful and abstracted way.

Annie McKinnon
Annie Mckinnon is a creative technologist, sound designer and composer. Named as one of Synergy Percussions 40Under40 composers in 2016, Annie will present a unique kinetic installation.

Peter Blamey
Peter Blamey will create a sound installation powered and triggered by solar energy. His work explores sound, energies and residues, and the relationships between people, technologies and environments.
