Event description
Integrating the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers in improving teaching and school capacity - Gonski Institute for Education

About this Event

Day 1 (future days will be delivered in 2020). Attendees can attend one, some or all of the days provided.

The Australian Professional Standards for Teachers describe the knowledge, skills and understanding expected of competent and effective teachers. This professional learning day focuses on strategic, visionary and hands-on approaches to embedding the standards to esteem our teachers and profession; build professional growth; facilitate collaboration and coherence; create mentors and develop instructional leaders. The learning will explore ways to plan and implement programs, evaluations and organisation to improve and share practice.

Mark Grant - CEO AITSL - opening address

Case Study One

The integration of the APST through an evidence-based culture has enabled the school to provide opportunities for all staff to improve their teaching capacity. In doing so, Macarthur Girls High School has supported those who are seeking certification, and provided them with opportunities to do so as part of their everyday practice. In addition, all aspects of the School Plan were strategically backward mapped to the APSTs and School Excellence Framework, ensuring there was a clear alignment in continuously improving teacher practice. In doing so, the various frameworks that underpin the work of teachers on a daily basis are embedded and seen as part of everyday practice.

Case Study Two

Prairiewood High School will share collaborative processes to align faculty and whole school portfolio's, structures and organisation with the APST and Principal standard for capacity growth and to enrich programs, leadership and school leadership capacity and succession planning. This case study is applicable to primary and high school contexts and aims to develop a mind-set shift in school improvement.

Break out sessions in the afternoon will be led by HALTS, for school leaders, teachers and colleagues interested in pursuing higher accreditation and/or having a deeper understanding of the standards and how to embed them.

Presenters include Mark Grant, Karen Endicott, Emma Mansfield, Belinda Giudice, Melinda Haskett, Amanda DeCarli, Lila Mularczyk, Karen Graham and Abby Saleh.

This course is accredited by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) for 6 hours of professional learning at Lead Teacher level.
