Description

We invite members of the Afghan community in Dandenong and surrounding suburbs to join us on the International Day of Elimination of Violence Against Women, to create dialogue, awareness and opportunities for action to prevent violence against women and promote gender equality. Discussions will focus on the positive role that Islam can play in addressing family violence and acheiving gender equality and how you and your community can be empowered to take action.

Hear from a panel of local Afghan community and religeous leaders, including key note speaker Imam Khalil Hamid, on their personal and professional experiences of the intersection of gender, faith and violence against women. Panel disucssion will be followed by an audience Q&A.

Afternoon tea and childcare provided. Please note - the forum will be predominantly run in Dari.

Bookings essential. Tickets limited to 50 people.

Car parking close to the venue is extremely limited. We encourage attendees to utilise public transport on the day.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

There is very limited car parking close to the venue. Most nearby car parking has two hour restrictions and requires tickets. We encourage those attending the forum to access the event using public transport. The venue is located less than 10 minutes from Dandenong Station.

I want to bring my children. How do I book them in for childcare?

When registering for the event, there will be an option to select a ticket for any children who will be accessing the childcare provided. If you have more than one child, please select multiple tickets.


Will there be halal food options?

Yes, all food provided will be halal.

I represent a service provider or community organsation and am interested in attending. Can I register?

This event is for Afghan community members only. The forum aims to provide an opportunity for local community members to openly engage and strategise against violence against women. A report of the event can be shared with relevant stakeholders upon request.


Why is the event for the Afghan community only?

This event is being held as part of the 'Empowered & Respectful Communities' Project led by WHISE. The two-year project aims to build the capacity of the Afghan community to design and implement their own primary prevention activitives to challenge family violence and promote gender equality. The event is also a key action under the Preventing Violence Together - a regional strategy designed to prevent violence against wome in the Southern Metropolitan region. WHISE are also organising a similar event for the wider Muslum community in Kingston on Saturday the 9th of December.
