Event description

Description

Chronic pain is increasingly recognized as a somatic manifestation of unresolved trauma if not a trauma in itself. Traditional methods have struggled to meet the challenge of pain, with a recent Cochrane review concluding that new ideas are needed. EMDR started out as a trauma treatment, but quickly broadened to a range of problems, including chronic pain, which is now the second most researched application of this method. Efficacy has been reported with Phantom limb pain, headaches, low back pain and somatization pain. Similar to PTSD, EMDR therapy appears to stimulate a change in the remembered component of chronic pain, including emotional and visceral elements. This represents a significant potential advantage over traditional coping-focused approaches. Brain-based models of PTSD and chronic pain are presented, together with their implications for treatment and congruence with active treatment elements of EMDR. Emphasis on skills of evoking and integrating somatic responses to bls, to change pain memories and pain related emotions.
