Event description

Description

Professor Ada Yonath – winner of the 2009 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for her studies of the structure and function of the ribosome – will give a plenary address as part of the 4th Annual EMBL Australia PhD Course at Monash University.

The Israeli crystallographer worked for decades on a project that saw her successfully map the structure of ribosomes, comprising hundreds of thousands of atoms, using x-ray crystallography in 2000.

Complex protein molecules produced in a cell’s ribosomes manage the vital functions of organisms. The discoveries of Prof Yonath and her colleagues have been influential in the production of antibodies, among other usages. In enabling ribosomal crystallography, Prof Yonath – the recipient of many notable awards – introduced the technique of cryo bio-crystallography, which became routine in structural biology.

Prof Yonath's address will be held at Monash University's Clayton campus. Building location will be advised closer to the event.
