Education Overview

This education equips health professionals with essential communication skills and tools to effectively identify and respond to emotional cues from patients, their families and caregivers. The evidence-based NURSES communication framework will be used to teach participants how to identify, interpret and respond to both verbal and non-verbal emotional cues, enhancing their ability to conduct compassionate, productive conversations with patients and their families.

The education enables participants to engage in role-play scenarios with professional actors portraying simulated patients, allowing participants to practice and refine their communication skills in emotionally charged situations. The Communication Facilitator and simulated patient provide real-time feedback, guiding participants to explore emotions to support their development of empathetic and appropriate responses.

Learning Outcomes

1. Participants will demonstrate an understanding of verbal and non-verbal communication through immersive role-play scenarios with a simulated patient during the education.
2. Participants will utilise the NURSES framework to skilfully recognise, identify and respond to emotional cues.
3.Participants will engage in a role-play with a simulated patient to practice the NURSES framework. Feedback will be provided by both the simulated patient and the Communication Facilitator, helping participants build confidence in using the framework. 4.Participants will develop a personal script based on insights they gained from the role-play and self-reflection.

The End-of-Life and Palliative Care Education and Training Framework is a tool outlining the essential knowledge and skills for healthcare professionals caring for those with end-of-life needs. It consists of three domains: Principles of Practice, Clinical Management, and Leadership/Management. Each domain's learning items are categorised into three expertise levels: Foundation, Consolidation, and Extension, forming a continuum of learning.

This education is at the Consolidation level.
