How could German musicians engage with their cultural heritage after the horrors inflicted on Europe by Hitler’s regime? This talk will reveal how in the title track of their 1974 album Autobahn the experimental electronic band Kraftwerk dared to look back to the past to find a way forward.

About the presenters

Chris Tonkin is a composer and lecturer at the UWA Conservatorium of Music who creates new electroacoustic performance works and generative computer sound compositions. His compositions have been performed by artists and ensembles at festivals throughout Europe, North America and Australia. Recently his work has extended into scholarly research on the history of electronic music.

Kati Tonkin is a European cultural historian and Germanist at the University of Western Australia. Her research interests include literary and cinematic engagements with traumatic histories; recently she has turned her attention to musical explorations of such histories and the ways in which sound contributes to our understanding of the past.
