Event description

Join the Tasmanian Land Conservancy (TLC) in its eighth year of controlling Spanish heath on Egg Islands Reserve. Invasive weeds don't belong in this important natural area - we need your help to stop it from spreading.

The TLC’s Egg Islands Reserve supports endangered plant communities and provides habitat for several threatened animals, including the Australasian bittern and swift parrot. The TLC reserve adjoins the Egg Islands Conservation Area; we work cooperatively with the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service to manage the weed threat to the islands.

So, if the idea of boating along the Huon River, experiencing beautiful scenery and achieving conservation in a team of great folk sounds good to you, then join us!

The Activity

We will be locating and handpulling small Spanish heath plants within the native wetlands and forest. We may also encounter the weeds gorse and blackberry, which we will also control.

  • Wednesday 12, Thursday 13 & Friday 14 July 2017

  • Friday 18, Saturday 19 & Sunday 20 August 2017

You can choose to volunteer for one or more days, however you will need to commit for the whole day (9am to 4pm).

Required knowledge and ability

  • A moderate level of physical fitness. You’ll need to be comfortable walking through tall grasses and bending down regularly.

  • All volunteers under 18 years of age must be supervised by a parent or guardian.

  • Your safety is our first priority. Before the activity commences you will be asked to complete and sign a Volunteer Safety Form

Not familiar with Spanish heath? Our staff can quickly and easily teach you how to identify the weed in its different stages of growth.

We will meet near Maxfields Road, Franklin (3.5 km south of Huonville) on the bank of the Huon River at 9am each day. From the meeting place, we’ll boat approximately 500m over to the island in beautiful wooden dinghies.

Alternatively, volunteers are welcome to assist TLC staff to boat up the river from Franklin meeting at the Living Boat Trust at 8am. All safety equipment, including life jackets, is provided.

You may choose to drive to Franklin in your own vehicle. Please let us know when you register if you would like to carpool with others.

What to bring

  • A sense of fun! You'll be working as part of great volunteer team and with TLC staff.

  • Sturdy waterproof boots (gumboots are the best option, as we are likely to find ourselves wading through 20cm deep water).

  • Sufficient clothing to be comfortable in potentially cold or wet weather. Long sleeves will protect you from cuts and scratches.

  • You may bring clean gardening gloves and safety glasses although we will be bringing plenty along for those who don't have any.

  • Your own lunch, snacks and a drink.

Spaces are limited to ten participants each day, so register early to ensure you don’t miss out! Registrations will remain open until 11 July or until all spaces are allocated.

If you wish to register over the phone, or would like more information, please contact Denna Kingdom (Reserves Manager) via email: or phone 0424 507 148 Monday to Thursday during business hours.

Thank you. We look forward to seeing you out there!
