We spend so much telling employees what to do about safety that they disengage, don’t follow the rules, take shortcuts, and disregard safety. We have to stop telling our employees what to do and engage them in conversations of why they have to work safely.

Safety is not something management does to or for employees. Management commitment to safety is necessary, but true safety requires engagement from each person throughout the organisation. Managers must believe safety is a corporate value, one that should never be compromised. You must consistently demonstrate this value through your own practices in what you saybut most importantly in what you do.

It takes courage to start a conversation especially when we have to discipline a person for a breach of safety. If we don’t start talking to one another and address the issues around safety, nothing will change. The quality of the safety culture depends on the quality of relationships, which depend on the quality of conversations.

This workshop is designed to help you understand why safety conversations are important and help you develop the skills and strategies for engaging in effective safety conversations.
