Description

The Event

Join us at an insights seminar. Meet Melanie Maslem from Coalfacer and hear about her experience making post graduate student and researchers' lives easier.

Whether you are a startup, industry expert, investor, representative of a major education organisation, government representative or education enthusiast - this is a unique networking opportunity.

Melanie Maslem

Melanie founded Coalfacer to liberalise and integrate the research pipeline with the segment of the financial markets apt to accommodate the risks within it. Borrowing contagion and corporate microstructure concepts from a career in structuring emerging markets exotics with leading trading desks and law firms in London, Melanie decided that a grass roots implementation of a model might have a chance.

Coalfacer

Research has long posed a challenge for finance. The standard model, funded from public resources puts government accountability concerns at odds with the curiosity fuelled search for new knowledge which is prized within the research community. This issue is frequently the subject of government sponsored review. Coincidentally, shareholder conservatism and fragmenting industry objectives makes it equally difficult for corporate science labs to justify research budgets to their CFOs. Management consultants have not struggled to find engagements to explain this problem or strategize to solve it.

Coalfacer is a platform providing the means to align research vision with corporate strategy. Academics engage with the industrial supply chain in a fluid, funeded process. Whether a research hypothesis was incidental or fundamental, our process can be used to match organisation level policies, individual incentives and objectives and resources to identify potential research project participants.

The research segment of the knowledge economy should not be slave to political whims or the baseless practices that have developed in response to them. Direct participants use Coalfacer to design and implement collaborative research projects. Typically these are higher degree students and post doctoral (pre-tenure) researchers on the academic side, supported by their KTP and faculty policy support partners; and engineers and scientists within companies on the industry side. Indirect participants use our tools to access risk based opportunities. Typically these are grantors looking to place capital based on impact objectives or capital markets investors looking to place risk within the research economy.
