Event description

Description

ECU School of Arts & Humanities, Criminology

Presented by Dr Natalie Gately, Dr James McCue, Ms Suz Ellis.

The Young Offenders on their Offending: The voices of young people in the Children’s Court of Western Australia project had unique access to young people (aged between 10 and 17 years) who are involved with the Children’s Court of Western Australia. These young people discussed their offending behaviour and their perceptions of their substance use, their families, social networks, health and schooling experiences. The findings reveal that some young people describe chaotic lives, with dysfunctional families and significant substance use. However, some are also very insightful, pragmatic and resilient in dealing with the criminal justice system and have hopes to lead a more pro-social and productive future.
