Event description
'Healthy food provided,' says your website, but building good eating habits doesn't just mean serving food, it means enjoying it too!

About this Event

ECE and OOSH services are required to support healthy eating (QA 2) and promote each child's agency (QA 1) - but sometimes those two actions can work against each other!

This workshop is for you and your team if you:

  • support a varied and nutritious menu for children, but still wind up serving sandwiches to keep the peace with fussy eaters
  • find fussy eating 'contagious', spreading from group to group even in progressive meal services
  • know educators would choose paperwork over sitting with the children at meals some days
  • are frustrated with the amount of rejected food, or have lost inspiration beyond reheating frozen snacks
  • seek stronger connections with families about building healthy food habits
  • want to feed children's brains and hearts, not just their bellies
  • would love to turn every meal into a fun memory for all involved.

Bec Lloyd is an experienced ECE/OOSH communicator, bringing a completely fresh and fun approach to an often neglected aspect of working with children - it's not enough to ensure they eat, it's sustaining their wellbeing that's the true goal.

This workshop at Sans Souci is specifically for OOSH educators, directors and committee members. Hosted by a friendly team, we'll be working on the issues that matter to you in before and after school care.

Light lunch included in ticket price

Educators say:

"My OOSH services caters for 105 children each and every day. We have so many dietary requirements to adhere to, menu preparation fell into the too hard basket. When I was given a copy of the Flawsome Family Mealbook my team and I were inspired to change the entire way the service thinks about food.

"We now only prepare fresh, delicious and healthy meal options for our children.

"Our children love the food we serve and so do the parents. AND it has also saved us money on our weekly shop since cutting out frozen food. Thank you Bec!"

Shannon Hunter, OOSH Manager, southern Sydney

"Educators are always looking for ways to make meaningful connections with children's families. Bec's book and workshops help bring educators and families together over one of the most stressful topics for many of us: children's eating habits. I can't think of anyone in the sector who can combine Bec's experience as a communicator, quality advocate, parent and foodie - and her sense of humour and compassion is an extra bonus!"

Jennifer Ribarovski, Sydney Uni ECE lecturer, NQF Consultant

Early Childhood Educators know that good nutrition underpins children's development, and directly impacts their behaviour.

Preparing healthy food is pointless if your children aren't going to enjoy eating. Bec will inspire you to make the most of lunches and snacks, engaging with the children and their families.

Her holistic approach to meals will help every educator to enjoy these times with the children and turn them from terrible into terrific.

Bec Lloyd is a former founding executive at ACECQA, who also happens to be an education journalist, mum of three, and dedicated foodie who was once a fussy eating kid (she still won't touch boiled egg white!)

In 2017 she co-hosted the Great ECEC Foodie Forage for children's cooks, educators and directors: an online course culminating in a week long exploration of ECE foodie opportunities around South Australia.

In 2019 Bec released her first book, The Flawsome Family Mealbook. which aims to bring families together at enjoyable shared meals more often.

Readers say:

"Bec's book makes family dinner feel more like self-care and less like a chore. Enjoyable, practical and heartfelt, this is a book for every type of family."

Amelia, mother of six, Warrawee, NSW

"Loving this book - it's so flipping sensible!"

Amy Smyth, Huonville, Tas

"Listen, you need this book. It is packed with strategies and insights, recipes and common sense. If you want to abandon that sense of dread as you stare down mealtimes and replace it with confidence and empowerment, get reading."
