Eat, drink and be political with David Marr and Laura Tingle
Tue. 28 March 2017, 6:15 pm – 9:15 pm AEDT
David Marr will join Laura Tingle in conversation to discuss his latest Quarterly Essay: The White Queen, One Nation and the politics of race.
In his timely and riveting new Quarterly Essay, David Marr looks at Australia’s brand of the politics of resentment now sweeping the world, from Trump to Brexit.
Pauline Hanson is not alone out there. A million votes are in play. Strategists in both Labor and the Coalition are asking, what can we give them? At stake are the progressive hopes of most Australians, hopes held hostage more than ever to the fears – especially the race fears – of old Australia.
David Marr is the multi-award-winning author of Patrick White: A Life. He is also the author of three previous bestselling biographical Quarterly Essays on Kevin Rudd, Tony Abbott and Bill Shorten. He has written for the Sydney Morning Herald, the Age and the Monthly, been a reporter for Four Corners and presenter of ABC TV’s Media Watch. Peter Craven has written, “David Marr is as brilliant a biographer and journalist as this country has produced”.
Laura Tingle is the Political Editor of The Australian Financial Review and, like David Marr, is a regular on the ABC’s Insiders program. Laura has over 30 years’ experience as a reporter covering markets, economics and politics. Laura has won two Walkley awards and the Paul Lyneham award for Excellence in Press Gallery Journalism. Laura’s two best-selling Quarterly Essays are: Great Expectations: Government, Entitlement and an Angry Nation and Political Amnesia: How We Forgot to Govern.
