The Independent Living Centre is pleased to host Scope - Communication & Inclusion Resource Centre for this exciting workshop, to assist organisations in WA to improve the accessibility of their written documentation.

What is Easy English: Easy English is specifically designed to make sense to people who have difficulty reading and understanding English.


This workshop will provide you with an introduction to the basic skills in writing documents in Easy English for people with non-functional literacy. Techniques to make your written language accessible will be explored. You will have the opportunity to put this knowledge into practise, with the expert assistance of the Scope trainer.Other aspects of developing your organisation's resources into Easy English will also be introduced.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Who is Easy English for? Watch DVDs of consumer testing and interviews with people who use Easy English;

  • Plain Language, Easy English – What is the difference?;

  • Resources currently available;

  • Clear Written Communications – The Easy Style Guide;

  • Easy English Checklist; and

  • Practical opportunities to work with the trainers in developing your own Easy English document.

    disabilities or people with limited literacy skills.

Speaker: Anna is speech pathologist from Scope’s Communication and Inclusion Resource Centre (CIRC) in Melbourne. She works primarily in the areas of communication access and accessible information, and is passionate about developing the capacity of individuals, businesses and organisations in order to create more inclusive and accepting communities for all. In her role at CIRC, Anna has developed and delivered customised training packages to a range of government, corporate and not-for-profit organisations. She has also presented nationally at a number of conferences, including the Australasian Society for Intellectual Disability (ASID), Association of Consultants in Access Australia (ACAA), the International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IASSIDD), and AGOSCI (topics on complex communication needs).
