Event description

Description

Melbourne Water’s Eastern Treatment Plant at Bangholme was opened in 1975 to serve Melbourne's growing population. The plant, considered one of the most sophisticated large-scale sewage treatment facilities in the world, sits on 1,100 hectares and treats about 380 million litres of sewage a day. Open House Melbourne provides the rare opportunity to go behind the scenes of one of the city’s most significant public assets, currently treating over 40% of Melbourne’s total sewage. Visitors will gain an understanding of the history of the plant including construction and design, the sewage treatment process, the way the plant continuously delivers significant benefits for the environment and community, Melbourne’s urban water cycle, and the values of Melbourne Water as an organisation.

Special Programming: Before and after tours, there will be a chance to talk with Melbourne Water staff and learn more about key projects at the Eastern Treatment Plant.
