Home School Science Day - Earth and Space 1 (of 4)

Stage 4 – Years 7/8 - Ages 11 - 14

Date: Wednesday 18th or Thursday 19th February 2020

Time: 9:00 am to 3:00 pm

Ages: Stage 4 – Years 7/8 - Ages 11 to 14

Location: 33 Wycombe Road Terrigal

Cost: $60 per student

Student Only Event: Parents to drop off and pickup. There are no provisions for parents or guardians to stay.

Special Needs: If your child has special needs, please contact me via email jacob@makesciencefun.com.au PRIOR to purchasing a ticket and we will discuss what arrangements can be put in place.

Age Requirements: This event is strictly for students aged 11 to 14.

Tickets: Once a ticket has been purchased, Make Science Fun Pty Ltd does not offer any refunds (unless for some reason the day is cancelled). If your child cannot make the day, please feel free to swap, give or sell your ticket through your own communication networks. Make Science Fun Pty Ltd does not keep a waiting list and does not get involved in ticketing once tickets have been purchased.

What To Bring: Display folder with certificate to get signed (If this is your first lesson, one will be provided). Pencil Case with pens, pencils, ruler etc.

All food and drink for themselves for the day (no peanuts, eggs or allergens)

Insurance: Make Science Fun Pty Ltd has full public liability insurance to cover Home School Science days.

Child Safety: Make Science Fun Pty Ltd follows strict child safety protocols. These include all Teachers having WWC checks and common sense rules such as adults not being alone with students at any time.

The intention for the day will be to complete Earth and Space 1 as per the NSW 7-10 Science Syllabus

Earth and Space

Outcomes A student:

› describes the dynamic nature of models, theories and laws in developing scientific understanding of the Earth and solar system SC4-12ES

› explains how advances in scientific understanding of processes that occur within and on the Earth, influence the choices people make about resource use and management SC4-13ES

ES1 Sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks contain minerals and are formed by processes that occur within Earth over a variety of timescales

Content Science Learning Activities

a. describe the structure of the Earth in terms of core, mantle, crust and lithosphere

Make and paint model earth from styrofoam balls depicting the internal structure of the earth. Include Ultraviolet paint to indicate tectonic plate interactions.

b. relate the formation of a range of landforms to physical and chemical weathering, erosion and deposition

Perform some actual physical and chemical weathering techniques. Modelling the formation of different landforms using flow trays and other techniques.

c. outline the origins of and relationships between sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks

Study a variety of sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks.

Make an edible metamorphic rock.

d. Identify that sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks contain minerals

Study a variety of minerals and look at

e. classify a variety of common rocks and minerals into groups according to their observable properties Use streaking, lustre, cleavage and Moh’s scale of hardness to classify a number of common rocks.

f. describe the conditions under which fossils form

Looking at a variety of fossils and discussing the conditions under which they may have formed with a focus on flood geology.

Students make their own fossils to be cracked open next term.

g. outline how geological history can be interpreted in a sequence of horizontal sedimentary layers, in which the oldest are at the base and the youngest at the top A discussion on geological columns and some process type practice skills.

h. describe examples to show how people use understanding and skills from across the disciplines of science in occupations related to the exploration, mining or processing of minerals in Australia

A look at froth flotation and some brainstorming into how we can separate the black rutile from the sand at the Haven / Terrigal.
