Event description

Description

This is a full-day interactive workshop for teachers (K-10). The format will be 'lecture-style' on the theory of dyscalculia, alternating with small group work, providing lots of practical hands-on activities which will allow participants to use concrete, multisensory, inclusive materials such as Cuisenaire rods, dominoes and paddle pop sticks.

The theory sections will discuss:
- The differences between dyscalculia and 'common or garden maths difficulties';
- How to recognise dyscalculia and the associated neuroscience of dyscalculia, including issues raised by co-morbidity;
- The self belief system, how dyscalculia affects students including maths anxiety;
- The theory behind general strategies and individual interventions. These practical interventions have been used by the presenters in their practice, and will be able to be used by participants in their teaching straight away.

There will be numerous resources, websites, ibooks and apps which will enable participants to incorporate these strategies and interventions into their practice and plan lessons to support students with dyscalculia or low numeracy.

This workshop is evidence-based on the latest work by eminent researchers such as Stanislas Dehaene, Brian Butterworth, Jo Boaler and Daniel Ansari, and eminent educators such as Ronit Bird, Jane Emerson and Judy Hornigold. It utilises Bruner's Concrete Pictoral Abstract (CPA) pedagogy, which is used by the Singapore Method and advocated by Nick Gibbs in the UK.
