Event description
A Two Day Irish Festival Held Over the St Patrick's Day Weekend!

About this Event

Dunnstown is a small village just outside Ballarat one hour from Melbourne nestled in the foothills of Mount Warrenheip.

It was named after Robert Dunn who established the Dunnstown Distillery in 1854 which is famous for being the first Irish Whisky Distillery in Australia.

With its rich volcanic soil from Mount Warrenheip, it attracted many Irish settlers to the area who migrated after the great famine. The settlers farmed the land, raising their families with mixed farming, mainly growing potatoes.

Many of those families still live in Dunnstown to this day, with potatoes still grown in abundance in the area.

Because of its Irishness, Dunnstown was also known as “Little Ireland” in its day, so much so that the local pub was called The Shamrock.

The inaugural Dunnstown Irish Festival was held on St Patrick’s Day in March 2018 to acknowledge and celebrate Dunnstown’s Irish history.

Due to the success of last year’s event we are very excited to be holding the Festival again this year, on the St Patrick’s Day weekend. There are a range of ticket options available starting from just $30 + booking fee for a day ticket or $50 + booking fee for the two days (which includes free camping).

St Patrick’s Day is on Sunday 17th March however we will be kicking the Festival off with a “Night On The Green” on Saturday 16th March. The Night will be held in our marquee and feature the very popular Celtic band The Go Sets from Melbourne, some of our local Ballarat talent and will finish off with the original sons of the South West, The Settlement to rock us into the night.

We will be offering camping over night for those who wish, with great facilities available.

Food Trucks will be on hand as well.

To start off St Patrick’s Day, The Shamrock Hotel will be open for breakfast during the morning for our campers. The Shamrock is just 200 meters down the road from our camping site, a refreshing walk for those who wish or just jump on our shuttle service to and from the pub at your leisure.

A Family Day will commence early in the afternoon at the grounds with lots of entertainment for the kids young and old including a Jumping Castle, Face Painting, Sprints, Potato Sack Racing and many Irish Games on offer.

We will have Irish Dancing throughout the afternoon as well as Quoits and Hookey competitions.

Other competitions will be Sheaf Tossing, Potato Peeling, Potato Picking and of course the Tug Of War which went over so well in 2018, with a new event scheduled for 2019 – the inaugural Guinness Relay!

Roving mikes will be on hand to keep us informed and entertained throughout the day.

Live music will be playing during the afternoon finishing off with the very popular local band Old Melbourne Road (OMR) through the evening.

Children under the age of 18 have free entry to the event.

Please come along and enjoy the craic!
