Event description

Description

A little about your presenter

As a clinical educator and clinician with over 10 years’ experience, Nathan is a highly skilled practitioner. Over the years he has learnt dry needling from over 10 different instructors and has a wealth of knowledge to share. He combines his skills as both and Accredited Exercise Physiologist and Myotherapist and offers a unique approach to manual therapy, movement and exercise.

Nathan takes a pragmatic approach to clinical reasoning treatment applications. This gives participants opportunities to discuss case specific treatment applications. Both the opportunity to observe demonstrations and practice new techniques is provided.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM THIS WORKSHOP

This one day dry needling workshop is designed to refresh and extend knowledge. It focuses on clinical reasoning of technique application. Throughout the day, clinical reasoning of dry needling application will be discussed in the context of different presenting scenarios. These will include both chronic pain, movement deficit and acute injury models.

In this workshop participants will investigate approaching muscles from different angles and using different body positions for the client, sharpen the thought process underpinning their choice of technique and increase confidence in needling the more "challenging" of locations. They will focus on providing thorough anatomical and clinical reasoning to firstly justify and then apply the skills of myofascial dry needling under the skilled guidance of Nathan McKeown.

The first hour will be spent as an informal tutorial/discussion where Nathan will present an update on various dry needling research and approaches using projector guidelines and a workbook. The rest of the day, apart from breaks, will be filled with practical demonstrations and opportunities to practice.

This workshop is suited to attendees wishing to refresh or extend their use of dry needling in their clinical practice. It is an opportunity update knowledge, refine techniques of application and gain some first class coaching and guidance of dry needling within a Myotherapy framework.

Also a great opportunity for new graduates looking to 'sharpen' their skills and increase confidence with using DN in clinical environments and anyone else who simply wants to get amongst their peers and consolidate their skills from a highly experience educator and their colleagues.

You will learn or refresh how to:

  • Dry Needling locations and variations in approaches

  • Adapt your needling technique to your patient and their needs

  • Use variations on needle insertion and withdrawal methods

  • Manipulating the needle and how long to leave the needle in

  • Needling cautions, contraindications and needle directions for higher risk muscles

  • Dry needling and the pregnant client

Due to food intolerances and personal preferences, attendees are advised to bring their own lunch or may choose from the number of cafes in the surrounding area.
