Description

This workshop provides participants with an introduction to substances and their effects, and provides information about how to respond to alcohol and drug issues appropriately. The workshop also covers treatment options available in Queensland.

Upon completion, participants will be better equipped to:

  • Recognise problematic drug and alcohol use - types of drugs, their effects, withdrawal and overdose as well as impacts on physical and mental states.

  • Drug and alcohol methods and treatments - effective treatments, including community and residential programs, medicines and government controls.

  • Support people who have drug and alcohol problems - practical information about talking to someone about their substance use in a non-confrontational way; and responding to intoxication and overdose.

Why learn about drug and alcohol misuse?

Drug and alcohol misuse is the predominant problem for people who are homeless, experiencing domestic violence or engaged with criminal justice or child protection systems. Families and communities experience significant distress trying to support people with substance problems.

Lyndon has delivered drug and alcohol treatment services in NSW for more than 30 years and is committed to research and providing evidence-based practice. Lyndon has developed the Drug and Alcohol First Aid (DAFA) course to deliver up to date and essential information to service providers and community members.

Who should attend?

  • People working in the community services sector, such as those working in housing, domestic violence, disability support;

  • People who are new to working in the alcohol and drug sector.

Organised by

Lives Lived Well is a leading Queensland-based, not-for-profit support organisation for people who have problems with alcohol and drugs; and the associated mental health issues.

We work with people directly affected and those who are touched indirectly – like friends and family.

We are driven by a desire to help tackle the root cause, so that we can help reduce harm, aid recovery and inspire positive change.

We operate a wide range of program and services throughout Queensland, both residential and non-residential. Thousands of people pass through our doors each year, often seeking the same things – support, understanding and a chance to change.

While we help through face to face support, our reach is even greater through our phone and group counselling services. We also offer outreach counselling in some communities.
