The Dental Research and Education Fund presents
Concepts and controversies in Contemporary Clinical Orthodontics
For General Practitioners
The Milton Sims Visiting Professor Program is an initiative of DREF – the University of Adelaide Dental Research and Education Fund (replacing SAFDER). This program was established in memory of Professor Milton Sims who died in 2006 after decades of teaching orthodontics, primarily at The University of Adelaide as head of department. It is managed by members of the ASO and the University of Adelaide.
In October The University of Adelaide Dental School welcomes Dr Jay Bowman as the Milton Sims Visiting Professor. He is currently Adjunct Associate Professor at St Louis University and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics.
Dr Bowman’s presentations will provide relevant and entertaining insights into issues that resonate in contemporary dental practice. Facial aesthetics is a key driver of orthodontic demand with treatments featuring non-extraction and arch development being strongly promoted. However, does non-extraction treatment really deliver optimal “full, pleasing profiles” and perfect smiles without “dark corners”?
Dr Bowman will discuss literature-based evidence related to the aesthetic consequences of both extraction and non-extraction strategies. Dr Bowman will also share his extensive knowledge of the contentious, and often hotly debated, topic of growth modification. Most often, the debate swirls around the claimed mechanisms of a bewildering array of appliances to manage Class II patterns.
His elegant presentations are anchored on the best available evidence and will include discussions of molar distalization, functional appliance effects and the use of miniscrews.
This is a wonderful opportunity to experience a balanced view of pertinent, often complex, concepts encountered in the orthodontic management of patients. Dr Bowman is internationally highly regarded as a “must hear” educator as he is both clinician and scientist.
This will be an eat and learn session with light refreshments available before and during the presentations. Please advise special dietary requirements when you register.
