Event description

Description

Are you a rule breaker or rule maker?

RMIT Gallery invites audience members to collaborate through a series of rule based pattern-making to create an artwork that will span across the gallery floor at as part of the exhibition Experimenta Make Sense. No need to book - just drop in!

Briony Barr’s Drawing on Complexity (The Experimenta Series) is a participatory artwork that will build on a complex network of tape patterns over the duration of the exhibition. As the layers of coloured tape build up over time, so too do the complex adaptive systems that have inspired the project. Like a bustling crowd of people or the fluctuating stock market, complex systems emerge in everyday life – showing us that larger patterns in the system evolve through interactions between the parts, showing us that ‘the whole being more than the sum of the parts’.

Part of a larger investigation into pattern formation, this artwork will compare what emerges when different groups of people make a drawing together within a similar set of parameters. Here is your chance to choose your coloured tape and decide how you will leave your mark.

Drop-in access throughout the duration of the exhibition during gallery opening hours.

This project is presented as part of Experimenta Make Sense: International Triennial of Media Art, exhibiting a program of over 20 leading international and Australian artists. Both playful and challenging, this exhibition asks audiences to immerse their senses into a ‘thinking’, ‘feeling’ and ‘doing’ contemplation of what it is to be human in the digital age of technological acceleration. See the exhibition at RMIT Gallery from 2 October – 11 November 2017.or visit the website for full exhibition details www.experimenta.org/makesense
