High Performance Sailplanes - Is it just aerodynamics that makes them soar?
Rik Heslehurst, PhD, FIEAust, FRAeS, FSAMPE, CPEng
Sailplanes (gliders) have been the first forms of human-flight. The Wright Brothers and those before them all flew gliders before the successful powered flight. This presentation will address the questions, “are high performance sailplanes just aerodynamics or do materials play an important role?” The presentation will look at the requirements for high performance soaring and how advanced materials and processes help.
