Description

Citizens Climate Lobby, Hume, continues to look for opportunities to inform our community of the potential inovative solutions prompted by climate change.

This month we are honoured to have Dr Andrew Blakers present on Pumped Hydro and the potential of this technology.

The Australian National University (ANU) has completed an audit of 22,000 potential sites across Australia for pumped hydro energy storage, which can be used to support a secure and cheap national electricity grid with 100 per cent renewable energy.

The zero-emissions grid would mainly rely on wind and solar photovoltaic (PV) technology, with support from pumped hydro storage, and would eliminate Australia's need for coal and gas-fired power.

Lead researcher Professor Andrew Blakers said the short-term off-river pumped hydro energy storage (STORES) sites combined had a potential storage capacity of 67,000 Gigawatt-hours (GWh) – much more than the capacity required for a zero-emissions grid.

Andrew Blakers is Professor of Engineering at the Australian National University. He joined ANU in 1991. He was a Humboldt Fellow and has held Australian Research Council QEII and Senior Research Fellowships.

His research interests are in the areas of silicon photovoltaic solar cells and renewable energy systems.

He was a leader and first author of the team that developed PERC silicon solar cell technology, which currently has approximately 50% of the worldwide solar market and cumulative module sales of around $50 billion.

He has interest in sustainable energy policy and is engaged in detailed analysis of energy systems with high (50-100%) penetration by wind and photovoltaics with support from pumped hydro energy storage.
