There are more than 35 diurnal and nocturnal raptor (bird of prey) species in Australia, and we are fortunate in Central Victoria to have more than 20 of these spectacular birds represented in our region. Central Victoria’s diurnal raptors range in size from the diminutive Australian Hobby to the majestic Wedge-tailed Eagle (the third largest eagle on the planet). Our local nocturnal raptors (owls) include Australia’s smallest, the Australian Boobook to the largest, the mysterious Powerful Owl.

Our brief glimpses of raptors are always at some distance and it is through the camera lens that we can fully appreciate their intricate beauty. Daryl Fleay is a nature photographer with a particular passion for capturing images of our local raptors. During his presentation Daryl will display some of his favourite raptor images, while discussing some of the characteristics of the various species and outlining his photographic methods.
