Join us for a journey into the music of internationally renowned composer, Douglas Knehans, Visiting Artist at Ainslie and Gorman Arts Centres in October. With a gift for extravagant colour, beautiful melodic style, clear musical form and engaging, soulfully dramatic work, Knehans' music has gained the attention and appreciation of audiences and performers around the world. At this special event, Knehans will give an illustrated lecture on his music and composition practice, with a focus on the new opera libretto project he is working on with ACT based, award-winning writer Mark Henshaw (Snow Kimono, winner of the NSW Premiers Prize).

A graduate of the former Canberra School of Music, with Masters and Doctoral degrees from Yale University and now Norman Dinerstein Professor of Composition Scholar at the world renown College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) at the University of Cincinnati, Knehans is a significant figure in the international contemporary composition landscape. His works have been performed across the world, in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Louisville, Cincinnati and across the US as well as Tokyo, Hong Kong, Kiev, Cracow, Vienna, Rome, London, Athens, Thessaloniki, Amsterdam, Prague, Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, Hobart and Sydney. He has been commissioned extensively in Australia and the U.S., and is frequently invited to speak on his expertise in new music and electroacoustic composition. Knehans has a broad practice, and his music for Television has been nominated for an EMMY Award and he composed evocative music for the short film A Song of Air, which was invited to the prestigious Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival (France).
