Event description

Description

Dig into the archives of Melbourne’s most famous demolition company, Whelan the Wrecker, and find out how the ornate ‘Marvellous Melbourne’ of the 1880s was modernised in the mid-1900s.

Jim Whelan secured his first demolition contract in the 1890s, and for nearly 100 years Whelan the Wrecker razed some of Melbourne’s most recognisable landmarks, including the Abbotsford vinegar factory on which the original skipping girl, ‘Little Audrey’, was installed.

See newspaper cuttings, photographs and other ephemera from the Whelan collection that tell a story about progress, preservation and the historic fabric of Melbourne.
