Event description

Description

The last hieroglyph (a Greek term meaning ‘sacred writing’) was carved in Egypt in 394 AD. In the centuries that followed, knowledge of how to read this language was lost – until Napoleon’s conquest of Egypt in the late 18th century renewed European fascination with Egypt’s ancient and mysterious culture.

Hear about the race to crack the hieroglyphic code, and the discovery that made it possible.
