Event description

Description

Meet Prince Rupert of Bohemia, nephew of Charles I of England, and his pet dog, Boy.

During the 17th-century English Civil War, which was sparked by Charles’s clashes with his own parliament, Rupert and Boy were inseparable companions on the battlefields. But they also found themselves at the centre of a war of words, as the subjects of satirical pamphlet exchanges between the sides of the conflict.

See selected items from the John Emmerson Collection, one of the world’s largest collections of rare English printed works. Items on display include:

  • pamphlets about Rupert’s poodle, Boy, written by both the Royalists and the Parliamentarians
  • a copy of Cicero’s De officiis owned by Prince Rupert and bearing his signature
  • a letter from Charles I to his nephew, written in the king’s own hand.
