Event description

Description

Join us for a seminar from Professor Oren Yiftachel, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Beersheba, visiting Scholar at the Centre for Urban Research RMIT.

This presentation analyzes the attempt to implement a 'just city' approach through the application of 'social impact assessment' of urban plans. It first reviews the evolution of the 'just city' debate in planning and urban theory, highlighting the tensions between distribution, recognition and decolonization. On this basis it discusses the design and application of social impact assessment (SIA). The lectures draws on Professor Yiftachel's long engagement in, and reflections on, alternative planning projects conducted in Beersheba, Tel-Aviv and Jerusalem, Israel/Palestine. It shows that an introduction of SIA is both possible and highly needed, although it raises new tensions and dilemmas for practitioners and theorists.
