Docklands History Group: Marvellous Smellbourne: early Melbourne’s noxious trades

Early Melbourne choked in the stench of noxious trades such as tanneries, abattoirs and glue factories, earning the city the unflattering moniker of ‘Marvellous Smellbourne’. A century-long struggle to clean the city’s air began. Join author and historian, John Lack, for this fascinating presentation about a forgotten chapter of Melbourne’s history.
This event is free. Places limited, bookings essential.

Punch quote: 'Ah! if Batman had only live to row up the Yarra in his whaleboat on the 3rd of June 1882, what a wonderful change he would have noticed in the 'pellucid stream' he rowed up 47 years ago.'
Punch, June 8 1882
