For the month of February as part of the Sustainable Living Festival The Dock becomes an Eco City Hub with activities and events throughout the month related to Sustainability
6, 13 and 17th Feb sessions : Biodiversity and Hydro Logic Lab
in the Hive pop up space in the Gallery at Library at The Dock
as part of Gallery Exhibition HYDRO LOGIC (an evolving portrait of Melbourne Water)
Biodiversity: Why is it actually important?
Biodiversity is a commonly used word, and apparently is very important for a good environment. In this session we will break down ideas around why it is important and necessary for long term survival of life through hard times.
HYDRO/LOGIC
An evolving portrait of Melbourne’s water
HYDRO/LOGIC is an evolving portrait of Melbourne’s aquatic systems creating an opportunity to explore key questions: Where does water come from? What is healthy water? & How can we care for water? Visual ecologist, Aviva Reed will fill the gallery with data visualisations and provocative prompts as a starting point for a community collage. She will then facilitate three DOCK ECO lab sessions ( ecology and art) in the space over the course of a month, in which to add community responses to the collage, bringing together knowledge, insights and questions. Lab sessions will draw on both personal and scientific data generated round-table discussions and collaborative drawings. HYDRO/LOGIC is an interactive, durational installation taking shape as collective cartography, developed by visual ecologist, Aviva Reed, in collaboration with inhabitants of Melbourne’s water catchment.
Dock Eco Lunchbox sessions: Make art Learn Ecology
First Tuesday of each month July 2017 - June 2018
Learn something new in these intimate sessions with Visual Ecologist Aviva Reed. These simple and easy to learn workshops explore ecological ideas through art. What is Ecology? Ecology is the scientific analysis and study of interactions among organisms and their environment. It is an interdisciplinary field that includes biology, geography, and Earth science. At the completion of each of these workshops, participants will have a richer, clearer understanding as to how to incorporate ecological knowledge into their everyday decision making processes, both at work and at home AND have a take home illustration of the ideas. Aviva Reed is an award winning illustrator, artist & scientist. She has been working in this field for over a decade, within tertiary, corporate and school environments. She refers to herself as a visual ecologist, someone who makes visible the invisible, through context, story and illustration. Aviva combines art and science to encourage whole brain thinking. There will be 11 different themed sessions of visual ecology and illustrative techniques. Drop in for one or come to all. No experience or prior knowledge required. Accessible to all! Materials included: paper, pencil, charcoal, pen and watercolour.
