Overview

Sharpen your hazard recognition skills with our free, interactive workshop led by safety expert Alan Stevenson.

How often have you heard about an incident, and your initial reaction was, ‘What an idiot, what were they thinking?’.

All too often we make a false assumption, that is we assume that something will happen or should have happened based on what we accept as ‘true’ often without any real proof or evidence.

Hazard recognition is a capability that is often assumed to be present based on a person’s experience or position within a company.

For example, we assume that because someone has been promoted into a supervisory role that they ‘should’ be experts at hazard identification and risk management.

Wrong! Experience or title is not sufficient.

A study of an underground mining company published back in 2013 found that workgroups with long serving and some in supervisory positions only identified an average of 46% of hazards presented to them in a workshop situation.

So, if we can’t identify the hazards then we don’t even move onto assessing the risk and putting controls in place.

In this interactive workshop, Principal Safety Consultant Alan Stevenson will guide participants through the fundamentals of hazard identification. He’ll explore how our biases can impact our ability to ‘see the risk’ and share strategies to build and strengthen your hazard identification skills.

What we will cover:

· The fundamentals of hazard identification.

· Biases and the impact on our ability to ‘see the risk’.

· Strategies to build our hazard identification muscle and keep it strong.

· The role of situational awareness in hazard identification
