Event description

Description

'Do You See What I Hear?' joins international 90th birthday celebrations for composers Earle Brown and Morton Feldman.

Earle Brown and Morton Feldman were composers of the New York School mid-20th century, contemporaries of John Cage and Christian Wolff. The New York School challenged mainstream Western approach to composition to regard sounds as themselves, sometimes using graphic notation to articulate ideas and inviting interpreters to join in artistic expression. The composers had notably strong ties with the visual arts.

'Do You See What I Hear?' features two graphic scores – Brown's 'FOLIO and 4 Systems' and Feldman's 'King of Denmark'. In conjunction with international celebrations for these composers' 90th birthdays, Warren Burt and Carmen Chan will create a new work in their honour. Musicians are joined by dancers Tony Yap & Collaborators for two pages of Brown's work with new choreography – echoing the connections between composers and dancers prevalent in the New York School.

Program:

Feldman: King of Denmark

Burt & Chan: [new work in honour of Brown and Feldman]

Brown: FOLIO & 4 Systems

Musicians: David Brown (electric guitar), Warren Burt (ipad & iphones), Carmen Chan (percussion), Coady Green (piano), Miranda Hill (double bass), Gelareh Pour (kamanche)

Dancers: Tony Yap & Collaborators: Kathleen Gonzalez, Brendan O'Connor, Jonathon Rainin, Takashi Takaguchi, Tony Yap
