DO NOT MISS THE OPPORTUNITY FOR THIS FREE PARENTING WORKSHOP!
Tue. 18 October 2016, 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm ACDT
Many families experience lots of stress, and struggle significantly to adjust in a new country like Australia while trying to maintain their cultural identity, traditions and religious beliefs. Some families can experience ‘culture shock’. Some may experience racism, discrimination and their children may experience bullying at school, leaving their children feeling socially isolated which can effect on their social, emotional, mental health wellbeing and school performance. Migrants can also experience acculturative stress and struggle with financial stress as well as loss of traditional family child support. Therefore, in such circumstances the knowledge of Positive Parenting Skills will be very useful as it helps us to support and communicate positively with our children and plays a vital role for family unity while bringing up children in a new culture.
The first part of this interactive Positive Parenting Skills workshop will explore the skills associated with successful communication for parents that will include how to talk to children so they will listen and how we listen to them as parents. The purpose of this session is to equip migrant parents from ethnic backgrounds and culture to assist their children to develop their emotional intelligence, coping skills and resilience as part of successful communication.
The second part of this workshop will address; the difficulties in families around parent/teen relationships, identity crisis, social isolation, depression and self-esteem in the pre-teen/teen years. Strong family connections, positive family environment and support before and during adolescence are the protective factors against social, behavioural and school problems.
