About the speaker

Stephen Tobin has been a Consultant Colorectal /General Surgeon in Ballarat since 1992. He holds Associate Professor appointments at the University of Melbourne, the University of NotreDame Sydney, and Deakin University. He has taught and developed curriculum at all of these medical schools and received awards as an educator.

Stephen has been Dean of Education at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) since 2012, following an extensive career in surgical education and training. This includes developing the training program in Ballarat , supporting sub-specialisation in general surgery and being the designated RACS supervisor for 9 years. He has been faculty for the Surgical Teachers’ Course and chaired its revision in 2011-12.

Postgraduate Clinical Education studies were done at UNSW 2000-3, before a sabbatical period in Portsmouth, UK. Masters in Surgical Education was completed in 2014, with a thesis related to use of entrustable professional activities in surgical residents. He teaches on the Graduate Programs in Surgical Education program of the University of Melbourne.

Recent initiatives as Dean include the Academy of Surgical Educators, Foundation Skills Course for Surgical Educators and the JDocs prevocational framework. He is extensively involved in the implementation of the RACS Building Respect, Improving Patient Safety Action Plan.
