Event description

Description

One in five Australians have a disability, and while Australian society has come a long way in improving services for people living with a disability (thanks in large part to the numerous advocates and organisations working in disability rights), people with disabilities continue to face discrimination in many aspects of their lives, including access to services, education and employment.

The law, through the Disability Discrimination Act 1992, seeks to promote equal rights for people living with a disability, however as a country we still have a lot more work to do to ensure people with a disability actually have equal opportunities to exercise these rights.

Disability Rights Night will explore the rights of people living with a disability and focus on how Australia can improve in promoting equality. Join our panel of experts as they discuss access to services, the recent changes to disability services brought about by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and how the NDIS fits into a broader human rights framework.

A sign interpreter has been hired for the event. This event is catered and there will be an opportunity to speak with the panelists and other organisations involved in advocating for disability rights after the panel has concluded.
