Event Details

In 2004 a group of carer-parents connected through their kids with disabilities from the Ryde area of Sydney got together to work on the problem of there being no supported accommodation available for people with intellectual disabilities. The climate at that time in NSW was crisis intervention only which was a cruel process of finding any bed, anywhere in the state that might be available at the time of the death or incapacity of ageing parents.  Ryde Area Supported Accommodation for Intellectually Disabled (RASAID) was formed and after nearly 12 years of lobbying, begging, designing and planning the resultant cluster accommodation buildings became homes for 15 local adults with intellectual disabilities. This cluster is designed for these particular first residents to be a whole of life home.

Jenny Rollo OAM is the founder and President of the CdLS Association Australasia inc and mother to David aged 36 who has Cornelia de Lange Syndrome (CdLS).  Jenny will talk about the politics, the need for person-centred approach to accommodation supports, and designing a home that meets the needs of individuals within Platinum Standards. RASAID’s plans will be shared so that participants can take aspects of the design that will suit their family member. Compatibility of housemates present and future are vital to the success of any shared accommodation. Governance and succession plans are also under discussion.

This session is being hosted by Carers ACT for the information of carers. Options for disability housing are broad and varied and you should explore as many as possible before committing to one that is right for the person you care for.

Carers ACT will be live streaming this session. If you are unable to attend on the day but would like to view the live stream of the session from your electronic device (such as mobile phone, tablet, or computer), please register a “Streaming” ticket. If you select a “Streaming” ticket, you will receive a separate email at least two days prior to the advertised date and time with a link to click on the session. By attending and participating in this session, you consent to video, images and audio of yourself and those you are responsible for being used in this manner. As this session is being live streamed, participants are reminded to arrive before or on time. The session will commence once the facilitator is available and as close to the advertised time.

If you are unable to attend on the day, you may also change your ticket to a “Streaming” ticket, if this is more suitable to you.

Registration is essential through the link below. If a carer is unable to book online, please contact Carers ACT on 6296 9982 or by emailing rsvp@carersact.org.au
