Dignity of Risk - ONE DAY Course
Event Information
About this Event
The right to take personal risks and make our own mistakes is fundamental to our humanity, independence and sense of self. Taking risks and experiencing the occasional spectacular failure is how we learn and grow as human beings and is central to the human experience. Regardless of vulnerabilities, part of ensuring human dignity is allowing each person the right to take their own risks and make their own choices.
Yet, human services, health and caring professionals have a legal Duty of Care towards clients they are responsible for. Similarly, parents and personal carers have a legal and ethical responsibility towards the loved ones they care for.
This course explores how we can ensure we meet legal and safety requirements without wrapping those we care for in cotton wool. It looks at ways to maximise personal dignity, choice and self-determination, while ensuring caring responsibilities are met.
Content covered includes:
• Duty of Care legalities
• The role of risk taking
• Supporting self determination
• Bracketing bias
• Maximising choice and control
• Informed risk taking
• Diversifying experience
• Tools for empowerment
