Digital Oceans // Virtual Jazz Festival
Event Information
About this Event
Starting with poems on the pandemic and responding with their own experiences, UNSW musicians have crafted music that will have your heart racing, your mind whirling and your feet tapping.
These works will premiere with a radio broadcast on FineMusic Sydney, followed by a special livestream event where we will share music videos produced in isolation and insights from the musicians. Join us to hear work from the Jazz Orchestra and Virtual Jazz Collective (directed by Sandy Evans), and UNSW Advanced Jazz Ensemble (directed by Adrian Klumpes).
Jazz is improvised and collaborative, a profound art form that connects band members and audience in real time. Translating this to a digital performance, without the ability to rehearse face to face, is a continuing experiment. The resulting music is a product of its time, a musical expression of collective emotions and considerations.
Recording from their homes, these musicians have had to work beyond the call on an individual and collective level. They have found ways to embrace technology in wholly new ways to create and present their creative work.

Premiere Broadcast // FineMusic Sydney FM
Saturday 15 August, 7pm
FineMusic Sydney’s Emergent Jazz program will feature an entire program of UNSW student compositions. These COVID times have seen university campuses turned asunder, with remote learning leading to much improvising in course delivery, as well as of course in the very nature of jazz itself. Host Keith Pettigrew will present a program of works to celebrate not only student survival, but also musical excellence.
Listen in at 102.5FM, Fine Music on DAB+, or stream from FineMusicSydney.com.

Livestream Event // Online
Tuesday 18 August, 6pm
Following the musical premiere, join us for the premiere of three music videos. While working from home, these emerging musicians not only composed and recorded original works, they collaborated with UNSW’s professional creative staff to craft video responses. These visual works are an extension of the powerful musical expressions. Join us to also hear insights from the musicians on the works themselves and the unique creative process.
