DIGITAL INTELLIGENCE FOR HIGH SCHOOL LEADERS:

A ONE-DAY INTRODUCTION TO PRACTICAL STRATEGIES TO ADDRESS DIGITAL DILEMMAS

//About the course:

This is a one-day introduction to a range of concepts that are implicated in leading a school with digital intelligence, confidence, and a wellbeing focus. The day will be a combination of activities and reflections on where your school is at on managing a range of issues that arise out of the use of digital devices in the school and how to address them in a proactive, sustainable way.

//Key learning:

Untangling the digital landscape in your school

  • Introduction to Cyberpsychology in a school context
  • Unpacking the models of Digital Citizenship, Digital literacy and Digital Intelligence.

The challenges and concerns of digital devices in schools

  • The 3D’s: Digital distraction, digital dependency and digital dementia
  • The impact of video games and social media use in the home on school performance and participation
  • The challenge of authentic self-care in a digital age

Solutions and opportunities for enhancing positive digital citizenry:

  • Meaningful and relevant design of policy in which digital device use is implicated (BYOD, Anti-bullying, wellbeing/pastoral care).
  • The value and opportunities of embedding the Social-Personal, Ethical Understanding and ICT Capabilities across KLA’s and whole school programs
  • Engaging the student voice in decision making
  • How High School eSports leagues (HSEL) can help engage the disengaged

Your Facilitator

Jocelyn BrewerJocelyn Brewer is a Sydney-based registered psychologist with a special interest in the psychology of technology and wellbeing in the digital age. She is a Senior Associate at Cut Through Coaching & Consulting and has over 14 years’ experience in education, both as a high school teacher and school counsellor/ psychologist. Jocelyn is part of Sydney University’s Cyberpsychology research program and who has been studying the impacts of technology on human behaviour for a decade. In 2013, Jocelyn created Digital Nutrition™ to help guide best-practice, balanced tech use and healthy relationships with digital devices and is completing a Masters of Applied Science at Sydney University - where she also has a teaching role - looking into the role of self-control and mindfulness in the prevention of Problematic Internet Use. She regularly comments in the media on a range of contemporary issues and presents to various groups about the impacts of technology and digital wellbeing.

Completing this course will contribute 5 hours and 00 minutes of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Registered PD addressing 6.2.4, 6.3.4 and 6.4.4 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient, Highly Accomplished or Lead Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

Q. I'm a Primary School Teacher but I'm really interested in this. Can I still attend?

A. Yes, but bear in mind the digital habits and policy requirements will be focused on teenagers.
