About this event

In this course Mind Over Manner’s facilitator will take attendees through a dynamic five-part program that will assist you with a better understanding of how neurodiverse young people think, learn and behave differently. Using a suite of filmed resources, facilitator Susan Haldane will provide strategies and practical skills to help the neurodiverse young person in your life reach their full potential.

Dialling Up, Dialling Down is not just professional development for educators – it’s for anyone working with youth looking to understand the why behind challenging behaviour. It’s for whānau who are struggling with daily life at home and want a new way forward. It’s for education professionals seeking a more compassionate, mana-enhancing way to work with neurodiverse rangatahi.

This course is delivered across 5 x 2 hour sessions (between 11 August and 6 October 2022) and is available to watch live or on-demand at a time that suits you.

Learning outcomes

After the five sessions, participants will be able to:

  • Identify sensory and cognitive differences, and create tailored plans to manage the sensory needs of the young person
  • Work with understanding of the parasympathetic nervous system to create calm and reduce anxiety
  • Communicate more effectively with neurodiverse rangatahi in a reciprocal way
  • Create appropriate flashcards and transition maps, and undertake a sensory audit of their own learning or home environment
  • Better understand the root causes of rude, shut down or confused behaviour and address the cause (sensory overwhelm) not the symptoms (“problem behaviour”)
  • Manage meltdowns in the class and home in a way that enhances the mana of all present
  • Facilitate emotional drain-off and build a relationship of trust and connection
  • Balance the needs of all members of a class or whanau – neurodiverse or otherwise
  • Create lesson plans/moments of learning using the child’s special interes
  • Activate a broader understanding of neurodiversity among whānau or workplace based on recognition of the cognitive differences in all of us.

ABOUT MIND OVER MANNER

Everyone's brains are wired a little differently! Mind Over Manner celebrates these differences and provides creative workshops to create social change for our neurodiverse young people.

Mind Over Manner is a charity with 10+ years experience delivering arts-based workshops alongside educators, whānau, professionals and communities. Our workshops reframe neurodiversity as something to be celebrated and cherished, provide fast-tracked learning to those who need it most, and share life-changing strategies and tools that support neurodiverse young people to not only survive, but thrive. 

We believe those in Takiwātanga (meaning in their own time and space) are our most creative and perceptive thinkers. By learning more about how to lean into their cognitive and sensory differences, we find that what's good for the neurodivergent is good for us all, too.

Mind Over Manner is driven by Susan Haldane, a mother and a creative with a lifetime of experience both working alongside neurodiversity and as a theatre maker. Our workshops, passionately facilitated by Sue and grounded current best-practice, are brought to life by a team of highly-trained actors with a passion for using their creative practice for social change.

We've seen time and time again the unique power of the arts to shift people's hearts and minds. It is this creative approach that makes our workshops different. By bringing to life real-world scenarios, unpacking them and reassessing our responses, we are able to empower everyone - neurodiverse or otherwise - to find a more connected way forward for our young people who think, learn and behave differently.
