Dr Derek Mahoney

Specialist Orthodontist - NSW - Orthodontics in the multidisciplinary treatment of paediatric OSAS.

Dr. Mahony is a Specialist Orthodontist who has been in private practice for over 30 years. He has built his practice, clinical teaching, and worldwide reputation in offering early interceptive orthodontic treatment. Dr. Mahony is an invited reviewer for many dental journals, in the field of facial development, and its association with nasal breathing. He has been involved in leading research linking maxillary arch expansion to a number of systemic disorders such as bed wetting and ADHD.

Dr. Mahony’s presentation will compare the different combined treatment modalities for paediatric OSAS, including orthodontic treatment options. You will learn how to identify the relationship between malocclusions and ADB in children while considering the most favourable dentofacial orthopaedic treatment outcomes for these children, once their nasal airway has been improved. It will also look at the stability of their improved airway with and without role of myofunctional therapy.

This topic will provide an insight into the crucial role of orthodontics in the multidisciplinary treatment of paediatric OSAS.

Ms Cathy Boyce

Oral Health Therapist - QLD

‘Back in Black’ About the same time the Aussie band AD-DC released their hit ‘Back in Black’ in 1980, silver fluoride had already proven itself to be a valuable tool for arresting dental caries in children across Australia.

Now it’s back, and the options for using silver fluorides in modern clinical practice has substantially increased for clients of all ages.

Following her prior experience, Cathy was an early adopter this time ‘round and has been using silver fluoride extensively in her clinical practice since early 2017. Cathy is now one of Australia’s most knowledgeable and experienced clinicians in the use of silver fluorides, is the author of the ‘ARM-ER approach to caries management’ and provides a silver fluoride resource website for clinicians.

Cathy will give an insight into her past and present experience using silver fluorides, different types available in Australia, the differences between them, and explain how clinical practice can be positively impacted using silver fluoride materials.
