Professor Laurie Walsh

Professor Laurence J Walsh AO is Australia’s leading authority on infection control in dentistry.

Laurence has published extensively on clinical microbiology and infection control topics, and has presented numerous international keynote lectures on infection control.

He is the editor of the ADA’s Infection Control Guidelines and a member of Standards Australia committees on sterilization and personal protective equipment. Laurence advises regulatory bodies including the CDNA and ACSQHC on infection control in dentistry. He has conducted practice audits for the Dental Board and for Qld Health public health units. He currently serves on the AHPRA professional standards panel.

John Cotterill

John graduated with a degree in psychology and has been working in Insurance for 10 years, utilising his analytical leanings and degree to deliver a client centred approach to insurance. The combination of the two means a robust understanding of insurance combined with a genuine care for peoples circumstances and how insurance relates to their every day life. John has a broad range of insurance experience from business to professional indemnity, cyber and intellectual property.

Risky Business

Regular interaction with clients is a daily occurrence for Dental Hygienists and Oral Health Therapists. With this in mind, you may face situations where your clients claim an alleged breach in your professional duties. Beyond this, there are many other risks faced each day, therefore it’s important to have a strong understanding of professional indemnity insurance and ways to reduce practice risk. BMS’ presentation will cover examples of industry claims, ways to reduce practice risk and key aspects of the professional indemnity insurance policy, as well as other products available exclusively to DHAA members.

Dr Melanie Hayes

Dr Melanie Hayes is the Chief Executive Officer of the DHAA and a Conjoint Lecturer at the University of Newcastle. She is also a registered dental hygienist and holds Bachelor of Oral Health and Honours degrees. She obtained her PhD in 2013, on the topic of musculoskeletal disorders in the dental hygiene profession.

Dr Hayes has subsequently completely a Master’s in Education majoring in Career Development. In a rapidly changing profession, Melanie is keen to ensure that the DHAA provides all members with the support they need for professional growth and career development.

Career Development

In today’s society, we no longer have jobs for life; individuals will transition through multiple career and need to adapt to such changes. However, traditional dental education only prepares graduates for one career option: clinical practice. These interactive presentations aim to provide a unique opportunity for hygienists and OHTs to learn about career development across the lifespan, and how they may work towards fulfilling and meaningful careers.
