Event description
Join us in Alice Springs for a half day event with two wonderful presenters.

About this Event

Roisin McGrath will be presenting on mental illness and Hellen Checker will be joining us to delve into the world of social media.

Synopsis

Mental Health

People living with mental illness, particularly those with complex mental disorders, experience poorer oral health then the general population. As dental practitioners, we need to understand the links between mental health and oral health and what we can do to support people with mental illness in accessing appropriate dental care.

Participants will learn about:

• The prevalence of common mental disorders

• The oral health risks associated with mental illness

• The barriers to oral health experienced by people living with complex mental illnesses

• Strategies to support people living with mental illness in accessing dental care

Roisin will also be doing a presentation on Dental Health Services Victoria (DHSV), the lead public oral health agency in Victoria, which is implementing Australia’s first Value Based Health Care (VBHC) Model for general dental services. This model aims to shift the focus from outputs (volume of services) to outcomes that matter to clients (value).

DHSV’s innovative VBHC model is underpinned by the core principles of: improving outcomes; focusing on prevention and early intervention; providing the ‘right services, by the right person, in the right place, at the right time’; enabling clinicians to work to their ‘top-of-scope’; measuring outcomes and costs for every client and reducing unwarranted variation in treatment provision.

This presentation will outline lessons learned from the initial ‘proof of concept’ phase, in relation to:

· Co-design

· Workforce skill mix

· Interdisciplinary care
