Join Russell Kelty, Associate Curator of Asian Art at the Art Gallery of South Australia, as he discusses Chinese Buddhist monk Xuanzang, and his journey to the West.


RUSSELL KELTY has curated and contributed to numerous exhibitions and catalogues. In 2015 he co-curated and co-edited the catalogue for Treasure Ships: Art in the Age of Spices exhibited at the Art Gallery of South Australia and Art Gallery of Western Australia as well as Everblossoming in 2016. He received a BA in Art History from Colorado State University, after which he spent three years living and working in Japan. He completed an MA in Art History at the University of Adelaide, with a thesis that examined Vietnamese architectural tiles from the fifteenth to sixteenth centuries found in Indonesia. Recently he began his PhD at Monash University which examines the depiction of foreign ships arriving at Nagasaki during the Edo period.
