Event description
RADLD FUNDRAISER: In this talk, Professor Dorothy Bishop will reflect upon the history of the DLD field and opportunities for the future.

About this event

Professor Dorothy Bishop will retire in 2021 after a long and distinguished career primarily focused on child language disorders and associated conditions. One highlight for Professor Bishop, (of many), was being the catalyst of the CATALISE process (2017), which led to the international consensus for the term 'Developmental Language Disorder' and associated criteria.

Dorothy's influence reaches beyond academia, as she is one of the founders of the Raising Awareness of Developmental Language Disorder (RADLD) campaign. In this talk, Dorothy will reflect upon the history of the DLD field and opportunities for the future.

Funds raised from ticket sales will support the ongoing work of RADLD.

Professor Dorothy Bishop

Dorothy Bishop is based at the University of Oxford, where she heads an ERC-funded programme of research into cerebral lateralisation for language. She is an honorary fellow of St John’s College Oxford, a Fellow of the Royal Society, Fellow of the British Academy and Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences. Her main research interests are in the nature and causes of children's language difficulties, with a particular focus on psycholinguistics, neurobiology and genetics. Her book Uncommon Understanding won the British Psychological Society's annual award in 1999, and she has published widely on developmental language disorders. She has a popular blog, Bishopblog, which features posts on a wide range of topics, including those relevant to neurodevelopmental issues. She is also on Twitter as @deevybee.

Organiser RADLD

Organiser of Developmental Language Disorder: How we got here and where we go next

You’ve probably heard about autism, dyslexia and ADHD but what about DLD? DLD causes difficulties with speaking and understanding for no known reason. There are serious and long-term impacts, as it puts children at greater risk of failing at school and struggling with mental health and future employment. The biggest challenge with DLD is you can’t tell by looking at a person that they have DLD and therefore, they often get overlooked for support.

People with DLD can be as different as you and I. However, it is important to know that with the right supports, they can thrive! By supporting our events you are helping to raise awareness and funds to help achieve our vision for a world where people with DLD are supported to pursue their goals and aspirations.
