Event description

Description

This free, one-day workshop is designed for postgraduate students at the University of Sydney who are researching their own community/organisation or students working on different cultures.

Writing a good and effective critique is not an easy task, especially when the critique is aimed at a group or organisation in which the researcher is/was a member. First of all, the researcher should consider certain expressions to use or to avoid in order to minimize conflicts arising from the publication of such critiques, be it about a critique of gender inequality, class, race, or others happening in the group. Some resaerch students are struggling to find the right way of delivering their criticism without fear of losing friendship with other members of the group. While such concerns are also mentioned in ethics application, there is no specific guideline of how to do it. Another challenge of writing a critique is the cultural factor. Cultural specificities have also to be taken into account as there are multiple cultural differences in writing and gearing criticisms between English and non-English speaking countries. These are some of the many challenges identified in formulating a critical voice, especially in thesis or dissertation projects.

Topics include introduction to scholarly critique, conquering cultural barriers, language and expressions for effective critique, ethical questions and dilemmas, and writing affective critiques. These will be delivered by a range of expertise from internal/external academic staffs, senior HDR students, and early career researchers.

In order to ensure effective learning, participants are required to attend all sessions or be present the whole day.

This is a fully catered event and has limited seats, so register now!

Registration will close on 28 February 2018 or after the tickets are sold out. If you want to attend but the Eventbrite tickets are gone, contact us directly and we will put you on the waiting list.

Eligibility and Requirement:
