Event description

Description

All organisations are subject to Health and Safety legislative framework. The legislation requires all employers, to provide a safe and healthy working environment for their employees and others who might be affected by their activity.

A key aspect of providing this safe and healthy working environment is the development and operation of a system to ensure the working environment is as safe as it can reasonably be.

The process is organised around seven steps which form the basis of the Health and Safety Management System. They are as follows:

1. Determining your OHS responsibilities;

2. Determining your risk management activities;

3. Translating risk management activities into OHS policies and procedures;

4. Determining gaps and deficiencies in your OHS Management system;

5. Developing and OHS action Plan;

6. Documenting and promoting the system:

7. Reviewing the system

While the ultimate responsibility for making sure that work activities are safe lies with the employer/owner of an organisation, everyone has a role to play in creating a safe workplace and in working together to keep it that way.

The development of a system is based on what your organisational risks are. A risk management plan is a start in determining what your risks are and how they should be controlled.

The next part is toensure your health and safety responsibilities in the workplace are clear and consistent where critical safe behaviours are required when fulfilling tasks. The development of clear unambiguous policies and procedures are critical in the compliance with legislative requirements and maintenance of safety standards.

This session will explain the difference between policies and procedures, when and why they are needed and the content of each. The session will include discussion on assessing the effectiveness of existing policies and procedures, with practical tips on how to develop clear easy to understand and implement policies and procedures.

Overall the session is designed to help you fulfil your obligations by providing guidance on how to develop the required health and safety process for your organisation.
