Learn about approaches and strategies for selecting and designing appropriate activities for online learning and teaching

About this event

Well-designed learning activities support students to develop and demonstrate mastery of the subject matter needed to progress towards assessment. Activities also provide students opportunities for engagement and connection, to build confidence and broaden transferable skills. Developing clear and well-designed activities is even more important for online and blended delivery, where you may be teaching across face to face and online formats.

How do you choose appropriate digital technologies that not only support the activity but also work across different delivery modes?

The workshop will discuss key strategies for identifying, choosing and constructing different types of activities for different purposes and learning outcomes, improving existing activities to support deeper learning and online delivery challenges, and demonstrate tools that can support these types of activities. Where relevant we will also discuss considerations in practice related to technology setup and delivery/facilitation.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify a range of possible activities and activity considerations for different learning strategies and outcomes
  • Assess relevance and alignment of particular activities and when they can and should be used in learning and teaching contexts
  • Identify digital tools that support relevant online activities
  • Develop or adapt a learning activity that could be used for dual, blended or mixed mode delivery

Kate Mitchell is a learning designer within Learning Environments, supporting staff to move to blended and online delivery as part of FlexAP. She has two decades of experience in education across Higher Education, Secondary and VET in multiple roles including teaching, educational technology support, training and staff development, and learning design. Kate is passionate about authentic assessment, ePortfolio practices, student equity and sustainable approaches to staff professional development.
